Bill practices in the areas of real estate, real estate finance, business transactions, like-kind exchange transactions, and real estate development. He is licensed in both Kansas and Missouri.
Bill is a native of Louisburg, Kansas. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and Business Administration degree from the University of Kansas in 1983. He worked for a large public accounting firm, Touche Ross & Company (now Deloitte US), for three years, and earned the Certified Public Accounting designation in 1985.
In 1986 he married his wife Karla, and went back to law school. He then obtained his Juris Doctorate from the University of Kansas in 1989. He went to work for Morrison, Hecker, Curtis, Kuder & Parrish (which is now Stinson). During the period of time he worked at Morrison, Hecker he obtained a Masters in Taxation degree (LLM) from the University of Missouri at Kansas City.
In 1993 Bill came to Lawrence, Kansas, to work for the law firm of Barber, Emerson, LLC, doing business transactions, transaction tax planning, estate planning, and real estate law. He worked there until approximately 2005 when he became General Counsel for Treanor Architects, P.A. (now TreanorHL, P.A.). During this time, he worked extensively on construction law matters, including owner-architect and owner-contractor contract issues, loss prevention, and dispute resolution matters.
While working at Treanor Architects, Bill represented real estate developers in connection with the development of several real estate projects located in Lawrence, including Bauer Farm, a forty-four acre mixed-use development located at 6th & Wakarusa; 901 New Hampshire, a seven story mixed-use project, Town Place Suites, a hotel project, 888 New Hampshire, LLC, a seven story apartment project, and 800 New Hampshire, a five story apartment project, all located on New Hampshire Street in downtown Lawrence. These projects involved developer requests for various forms of incentives including Transportation Development Districts, Commercial Improvement Districts, Tax Increment Financing districts, Industrial Revenue Bonds, and Neighborhood Revitalization Districts.
Bill has worked with Michael Treanor for many years. In addition to founding the largest architecture firm in the State of Kansas, Mike and his partners were active in St. Louis development mainly industrial and warehouse type projects. Bill has assisted Mike in numerous leasing, sale, purchase, like-kind exchange, and other related transactions involving commercial real estate.
Recently, Bill represented the developers of a seven story 213 unit mixed-use apartment project known as Converge located at 36th & Broadway in Kansas City, Missouri; a 168 unit project known as Mission Bowl apartments located at 5227 Martway in Mission, Kansas, and a 221 unit apartment project located in Castle Rock, Colorado.
Bill also represents several dentists in the area and assisted with numerous purchase and sale transactions involving dental practices.
Bill has three daughters, Kaylen, Megan and Lauren. He enjoys spending time with his wife Karla traveling and hiking.
